OT: Base path PERL



You've got to be kidding, right?

With all of the crap posts that come thru this list, and you think that mine
is bad?
I know that it's not directly merchant related, but is it any less OT than
discussions on popups, domain name registration, CSS, viruses, or some of
the other discussions that have recently taken place?

I know that some discussions are totally inappropriate (anything related to
politics or religion!), but, come on, are you telling me that a simple PERL
question is SOOO off topic and offended you so much that you had to chide me
publicly for it?

Yes, there may be forums specifically set up for such topics. I know there
is a PERL forum. However, I only needed one simple question answered, and I
figured that the collective brains of this forum would be able to do it.
Incidentally, Wil, you got it right. They were looking for a variant of
/home/user/htdocs/cgi-bin. I had it right, I just had a trailing /. So,

Probably because you updated OpenUI??
You need to activate "english" in the OpenLanguage section
Finding this section can be confusing. Near the top of the admin tree,
you'll see your store name which you need to expand to find the
OpenLanguage section

Is it possible to allow customers to pay by cod 'only' if a certain product
is in your cart?

I am building my wholesale website with Miva 4.22, and I've got a
question. We sell wholesale T-shirts, and presumably our customers
will be adding 4 medium of this shirt, 5 large of that shirt. Is
there a better way to add items to the cart other than the tedious
add to basket, go back, add to basket, go back, change quantity, and
so on?

Any help would be appreciated. A way to show all options on one page,
with a quantity box, would be dandy.

learn Perl from a Miva list and don't learn Miva from a Perl list. That is

Yep. Learned it on the Perl list. {MvEG} :-)

You never want to use a trailing slash in your Basepath because then the
variables later turn out to look like
/home/user/htdocs/cgi-bin//somedir/somedoc.ext which isn't always going to
turn out well depending on the script.

Miva engine bug?



The bug was causing issues with Windows Servers. Check the release
notes and OpenUI.org, they've posted about it in their FAQ.

Andreas, suffice to say my experience is different. I prefer to not have my
computer doing things without my knowledge. I've seen patches and updates
have results ranging from mere inconvenience to outright wreaking havoc -
even in 2000 and XP both on desktop and server.

As to reading technical information on what the patch is supposed to remedy,
there are two problems. First, most users would rather stick needles in
their eyes, since it's not in layman's terms. Second, it doesn't tell you
that it might cause something to not work properly.

Microsoft doesn't come out and say: "Hey, here's this new patch. We know
it took us about a year to figure out we screwed something up, we really
don't have the time to thoroughly test the patch itself, and it might break
a bunch of your stuff, but since it's your machine, it's your problem if it
doesn't work. But we have technical support available at $40 per call."

Just my two cents. You guys can do what you will, but I never apply
anything until I confirm it's reliable, and I absolutely never remove the
update archive from my drive for at least a number of months (like two to
six months), should I need to back it out.

I'm supporting computer networks since 1986. I agree in the old time Win311
& Win95/98 where a mess. But nowadays patches are safe and don't devastate
your system. To ask users to pick the right upgrades is like asking a car
owner to pick the right sparks for there car. THIS COULD BE DEVESTATING!

I personally use SP2 on one of my computers without any problem and I must
say spyware can't install itself anymore. Because the computer asks each
time if I agree to install the spyware ;-) That's not like before,
installing without knowledge of the user. The firewall is straight forward
and didn't need much configuration. Miva Merchant works like charm, even
without changing any settings.

FYI I'm writing only about desktop OS NOT server OS. XP SP2 is strictly for
desktops and NOT SERVER.

I beg to differ. Microsoft has a history of releasing patches that fix one
thing, and break three others. Users would be better advised to use the
Windows Update function from IE, so they can pick and chose the patches that
are known to be safe, rather than having potentially damaging updates
devastate their systems.

Furthermore, if you are using a decent firewall such as Norton Internet
Security, as we all should be, it verily negates the need for the patches at
all. However at a minimum, turning off the automatic update feature for as
long as it takes to determine if SP2 is stable will be all that's required.

I don't know if you've ever done any support work, but I've seen patches and
updates cause as many headaches as they solve. Better to err on the side of
caution and have the power of decision be put at the control of the user,
rather than allowing Microsoft to push down potentially hazardous code to
your machine.

NEVER recommend anyone to disable the "automatic update". Just because many
people don't update there XP OS is one of the reasons worms and trojans can
spread so well.

So, who ever reads this mail NEVER DISABLE this function. Those updates make
your system safer and less vulnerable.

But anyway it's a good advise to make backups.

My recommendation to everyone here is to DISABLE the "automatic update"
feature in XP. You also all should use a utility like Ghost, or other
backup utility that supports disaster recovery, so you can archive your
entire functional drive and OS now, and restore it later if need be. It's
just a matter of "best practices" to keep you going.

To disable the automatic update feature, go to:
System Properties (right mouse on My Computer and pull up properties)
Automatic Updates Disable "Keep My Computer Up To Date"

Many users feel that having OEM software discs is the "archive" and they can
just reinstall the OS and applications. But what they fail to account for
are the hours, days, weeks, and often months of incremental customizations
and changes, patches, driver updates, folder views, and whatnot that we
apply to the OS over time.

They also forget the amount of time spent on customizing application
software, such as file locations, program preferences and local program
settings. For instance, do you have an FTP utility with saved sites? Where
are those settings stored? Basically, any data that are not stored in the
"My Documents" or local user profiles should be identified and preserved.

I urge everyone to do some "housekeeping" in this way:

1) Clear your temporary internet cache, get rid of any temp files on your
drive, and delete any downloaded windows updates in the Windows directory
that you know have been proven to be functional, and can be deleted because
you don't need to back them out. When done, delete anything that is in your
recycle bin, and then defragment your drive.

2) When finished, do a complete drive image, or use a backup utility of your
preference that enables you to completely restore you drive. The term used
by backup software is "disaster recovery". Don't use a utility like
Iomega's "One Step Backup", because these utilities do not properly archive
operating system files that are in use, and will not restore your system to
its functional state if you have to recover from a hard drive failure.

Recommended archiving software that I've used successfully in the past, and
is reliable:

If you prefer, you can use your backup software to archive your data files
and operating system seperate. Many users prefer to have data files and OS
related stuff on seperate sets of media, so they can do incremental updates,
rather than full sets. Depending on how your backup or imaging software
works, Locate and archive your data files. Anything that you store in My
Documents, your Outlook .PST and mail account settings, IE favorites, and
other data files that are stored in their respective program directories or
in sub-folders in the local user's profile are important. For instance, if
you use Quicken or QuickBooks, look in the program directory for the data
file and other support files to ensure you get them backed up.
