Okay folks - one of my lifelines out of the clositer has been taken away -
Instant Messenger (AOL) that comes with Netscape. I know there are
security risks but what could be used? I am soooo frustrated right now.

Instant messaging clients can be quite dangerous
on a corporate network:

Did they remove the program or just block the ports?

Gaim, Yahoo, MSN, IRC (Chatzilla built in to Mozilla)
Always wondered why nobody fired up a miva list here...

They wanted to remove the application from our machines but because it's
tied with Netscape they couldn't. Port Blocking will be the next step. But
it seems to be a huge secerity issue with the powers that be - so I need
good solid information on how to setup an Instant Message application that
works with the outside world and can securely co-exist in a MS
environment.

ps...sorry I went to the MM5 list - I didn't pay attention to what email
address came up.

I'm sorry, but if you're too cheap to cough up $25 for someone's hard
work coding - don't use the product.
How would you feel if someone stole your hard work and used it without
paying you for your time?

The problem they most likely have with the programs is the ability to
transfer files via the program. That type of action is done by the users
most of the time, unless the app has a vulnerability. But if you run
windows you are running one big target anyway. Yah, programs can be
secured, but it is still the users fault for downloading, and running.
The same goes for email. Even the best email programs will let you save
a file. Why? because you need to. The problems happen when the users
save the latest Worm to their MS systems and start saturating the network.
It they start port blocking, see if you can change the ports, if you
can't try installing an IM client that lets you use different ports. I
am not sure is AIM lets you or not. I know that Trillian Chuck listed will.
It is pretty common for companies to block IM programs and ports. Some
do it because of PC/network security, some productivity, some because of
legal issues. A friend of mine has every email he writes actually read
by a person. Yes, every one. They have a department that just does that
for the company, and this is a national big firm. But in his line of
work, it makes sense.
