    OT Windows XP question

    Hello miva-users,

Can anyone tell me the function of prefetch files
(C:WINNTPrefetch) in XP. I am having some strange behavior in
explorer.exe, and the prefetch file (binary) is the only file
    showing a recent date change.

I'm hoping I can fix it, otherwise it's a machine wipe and
re-install. Happened during an attempt to install acrobat 7 (that
    resulted in a crash). I can't fix the 7 install, can't use 6 now,
and explorer.exe crashes on any attempt to open it.

    OT Windows XP question

Prefetch files are file images of programs loaded in operating memory for
speeding their start up time. From MS:

"Windows XP Professional monitors the files that are used when the computer
starts and when you start applications. By monitoring these files, Windows
XP Professional can prefetch them. Prefetching data is the process whereby
data that is expected to be requested is read ahead into the cache.
Prefetching boot files and applications decreases the time needed to start
Windows XP Professional and start applications."

Normally, you can delete any unwanted prefetch files, but I doubt that it
will help with your problem. I would rather uninstall the crashed Acrobat,
or use System Restore to restore the state before the installation.

      OT Windows XP question

      Bill,

Prefetching is WindowsXP's way of guessing and caching programs you -may-
      use.

As you boot your workstation or access programs on your workstation, XP's
prefetcher copies portions of those files to the Prefetch area of your hard
drive. When your workstation boots, XP prefetches portions of the files you
use most frequently and has any application you've recently run waiting and
      ready to go, in memory.

You can safely delete any or all of these files, which you may want to try.
And probably a completely uninstall and reinstall of Acrobat.

On a side note, Prefetching takes RAM. If you want to free some up some RAM
by sacrificing a tiny amount of startup
time, open regedit and go to the following key:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSe ssion ManagerMemory
      ManagementPrefetchParameters

      Then change the "EnablePrefetcher" value to one of the following;

      0-Disable
      1-Application Launch Prefetch
      2-Boot Prefetch
      3-Prefetch everything

      Hope the helps,
      - Tim
