Does a ReadyTheme sssign Image Type Main and create duplicate images?

I'm wondering if the adding/assigning of the ReadyTheme Iron & Wool (or any other ReadyTheme) also assign the Image Type: Main to products that already have Additional Images?

I have now seen this happen in two stores - all of the Product Images have been duplicated. The store was using a different name for the primary image (for example First). Now all 3000 plus products have that same image added with the Image Type: Main. Every product now has both Image Types and the Image Type: Main is the same image as the original.

I understand that the ReadyTheme is based on the Image Type: Main, but now 3000 plus products have to have a duplicate image removed from them. I'd want to call this a bug but I'm not sure.

So if this isn't happening to anyone else, could it possibly the way the host has configured the dev site?
