Separate orders based on shipping rules

How hard would it be to create separate orders based on shipping shipping methods as a result of shipping rules for items in a basket ?

Example would be a customer orders an item that needs to go air and another item that can go ground, they check out as normal but two orders get generated at the back end, one for ground and one for air.

Kinda like what the big e commerce sites do, split up the order depending on when you are going to get it

The only option to get close to this today would be to manually create a new order in the admin for the second shipping method. Miva does not split a single order into multiple orders like this automatically If you know what items need to ship air (maybe because it perishable) you could use Order Workflows and Order Queues to automatically move the order into the right queue so order processing is easier, but it would always be a single order.

You can create multiple shipments from a single order as well, but not actually split the order.
