Canonical -- slugified?

Client wants to slugify the URLs. Current Canonicals are the old-style /prodcode.html. I am thinking the new version should be the canonical? I haven't really seen any info suggesting one way or another, except MOZ, which only have some samples of 301s and canonical. Except for backing up the URIs, any issues with redoing this URL scheme?

As long as you do proper 301 redirects from the old URLs to the new ones you should be ok.
