Toolkit Removal - Miva Update

Hi Everyone,

Went to update our dev site to the current version and I am blown away - Toolkit needs to be uninstalled. I just found out when I was trying to update.

I have so many modules we have been working on removing, but we aren't there yet. It takes even longer to remove them than it does to install because we built our store around the functionality - as did Bill with his Modules.

I know I can extend my time but that wasn't in the plan so I guess I need help seeing which of Bill's modules will no longer work because toolkit needs to be removed.

This is the list of modules I have installed. I know there are some native replacements, but again we didn't get that far yet. I am removing toolkit on the dev site but before I do was hoping to see which I had to focus on first. Out of the ones below, which modules will fail to work once toolkit is removed? I believe it is all of them but I could be wrong.

mstella1 Although all of those modules should and can be replaced with native functionality none of them rely on Toolkit. Toolkit is a stand alone module that has a library of functions that was meant to fill the gaps in the Miva Template language. The Miva Template language has improved over the years and can handle the functionality that Toolkit provided.

But to answer your question removing Toolkit should not effect any of the modules you listed but they should all be removed regardless.

Toolkit doesn't need to be uninstalled, just updated. You can get the version needed at the Miva Apps Store https://apps.miva.com/emporium-plus-tool-kit.html

External Product Purchase

Quick reply for this External Purchase module - I think the new Quick Order Component is going to be a real hit! I've already added it to a couple of stores. I hit a bump in the road with it (when don't I?) but all the ones I have installed are working great. Much more "intuitive" than the External Purchase too.

I will still be removing all the modules as I can. I looked at the release notes and the last update for Toolkit was on 11/10/2023. I assume we should still be working on removing Toolkit?

Yes, that is the version you will need to be able to run the update. And yes, I know all the pains of trying to replace all the modules you have mentioned.

This is good info, thank you! Does anyone know what the CIM Activity Log module is for, and can I remove it? We still have some Weiland modules for which there appears to be no alternatives (Insurance by Subtotal, Weight Table Shipping by World Zone, Weight Table Shipping by ZIP Code Zone - the last two were specially modified to handle Australia's four digital post/zip codes as the normal version apparently only checked the first three digits.)

The CIM Activity Log module is needed for a number of modules. Here's a quick list the EmporiumPlus installation documents http://emporiumplus.com/docs/ - you should also be able to find a "help" link within the module's admin. The documentation will help you determine if a module needs the CIM log.

I don't think it was mentioned in this post so I'll mention it now. There is an update available for Toolkit so you can update your Miva store. While Toolkit should be discarded, IMO, you don't need to do it immediately before doing the update. This turned out to be good for one client who literally has thousands of Toolkit calls in his templates. NOTE: maybe it's an extreme case, for this client, replacing Toolkit with SMT needs to be done. But, this store isn't Shadows based and would likely benefit from a major Theme update and would be more cost effective than simply a project of replacing Toolkit calls.

Insurance by Subtotal

I don't know if this helps, but there is "insurance" option available via FedEx.

And since the other modules mentioned are shipping modules, you might want to give change your thinking overall on shipping. there are dozens of shipping modules/services now available for Miva. Call your account rep and see if they can walk you through a better set of options.

Thanks Bruce, Australia is a different animal when it comes to shipping. FedEx are very small here and generally only used for overseas shipments. Our main shipper is Australia Post, I guess like USPS, but Miva is very US-centric for shipping add-ons.
