Image display questions

A client of mine sells apparel products that come in different colors and sizes, with inventory variants set up for the various combinations, and a photo for each color. The product page shows one large image and a row of thumbnails for the other colors. We'd like to make some improvements, but I'm not sure if they're possible without custom coding that interacts with the Attribute Machine. What the client wants is:

1. Currently, when you select different options on the Color menu, the large image changes to match -- but only if you've also selected a size. If you leave the Size menu on "Select one," the image doesn't change. We'd like the image to always auto-update to follow the Color menu.

2. When you click on a thumbnail, the large image changes to match it, but the Color menu doesn't change. We'd like the menu to follow your thumbnail selection, so that when you find a color you like, you can click Add To Cart and get the selected color in your cart.

Do any of you have solutions for these?

what about setting default size so that it is automatically selected so a user would need to change the size before they order. would need to see the site to understand better

Yes, that's one possibility. The problem with that is that customers may put the item into their basket without remembering to select their size. When there's a Select One option, customers have to select a size before they can put the item in their basket.

You would hope that the customer would select their size but sometimes it's not the case.

Aside from adding a default value to the size option as mentioned in the thread there is no other way do accomplish this using native features.

To help customer who didn't pick the correct size you could implement the edit basket attributes feature on the basket items so that the customer can easily update the size if needed.
