image types

I find myself wanting to change the display order of our image types so that the "main" type is at the top (we've been using a different one which I would like to fix)
Doesn't seem possible?

Is this true for anyone? It seems whenever we upload no image type is the default however this says

Image Types define which images show up, and in what locations, on your website. When uploading images, the default Image Type is “Main.” You do not have to choose an image type in order to upload an image.

I seem to recall being told that image order is based on the file name. You know that dreaded alpha-numeric sort thing. The Image Types have nothing to do with the order they display - which is really sad. It would be almost perfect if the Image Type could control the sort/display order.

As for your other question - I don't think any image assigned to a product has to have an Image Type. Again, I might be recalling old information but I thought the Image Types were used so you could assign multiple images to a product when updating/adding via an import.

I'm not actually referring to image order for display.

When you upload an image while manually adding a product and are given a drop down of image types to use... Is it possible to have that drop down initially select "main" for you which you could then change if needed? Basically just have it be the selected default rather than a select one situation.

We waste a lot of time making that selection and then needing fixing it for all the inactive variants that it got assigned to is a pain when it was added to part products/variants that way.

Mark Hood The intent of the message on the documentation is to say that technically you do not need to assign an image type when uploading an image, not that the image type is automatically assigned. I can see how that can be confusing and I will work on updated verbiage with our team.

As for updating the admin functionality to default the main image type, that is not possible but I can add it as a feature request so our team can evaluate what is needed to add the feature to the software.

An alternate solution would it be setting up a CSV template that your team can use to add images to products. They can go in the admin and mass upload all the images then upload the CSV file to assign the images to the products.

I guess this should be added to the dream features in my opinion. While I understand it was built to not need a default image it really seems that almost everything has been set up so that you do need an assignment in shadows to actually make things work. Feeds, Page builder, search preview, basket pages etc.
