    Two products, one inventory count?

I have a client who sells office products like notebooks and pens, usually in bulk quantities. He wants to start offering a Decorated option on some products, and he will do custom printing of the customer's logo or name. The decorated products will have volumne discounts; so we're going to use variants, so that the Decorated variants can be assigned to specific price groups for that.

However, the Decorated versions will use the same physical product as the Plain ones, so we'd like to have them both use the same inventory count. Is that possible? If so, how?

    Thanks --

Kent Multer Can you utilize the Default Variant feature of a product. Within the product edit screen of the admin under the Inventory Variants tab you can select the three dots more menu and the Edit Default Variant which will allow you to add a default variant to the product. This default variant works just like any other variant except it is not tied to any product options.

Hi Nick, Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't see how I would use that in this case.

In this store, some of the products already have an attribute for their Color. We're going to add a pair of radio buttons to select Plain or Decorated. Decorated products will need a couple more attributes to specify the type of printing. I can write custom code to hide the extra attributes unless the Decorated option is selected.

I don't see how the Default Variant will help us to create two different variants that use the same inventory count. Am I missing something?

My first thought here is that a KIT might work. The decorated notebook product would pull from the notebook inventory.

Hi Scott, yes, I was thinking that might be a solution. We could set up "Decoration Service" as a separate product, and then the Decorated variants would have two parts: the Plain product and the service. But I haven't worked much with these multi-part products, so I wanted to get some thoughts from other users who've had the same problem.

          Thanks --
