VC USPS Domestic Shipping Module Error

I have Viking Coders USPS Domestic Shipping Module ver 4.03 installed. Recently, the module/store has started a notification at checkout that "shipping charges will be determined later" and the module is not calculating any shipping. I have tried to uninstall the module, but cannot as Miva reports one or more baskets are using the module. I have shut down the store, deleted all baskets, packed data files with both the standard method and open maintenance, and I still cannot remove the module. I would like to move to a different shipping calculation method, but need to get rid of this module first. Any advise on how to deactivate the module or perhaps address the error? Thanks!

Hi Marc,

Go to your Modules link (the location where you would upload modules to), find the module, uncheck the Active box and update.

For reference, Miva Merchant itself keeps a count of how many orders a shipping module has been used by (ie, a reference count), since when you view those orders in admin the module must be called to get information about the shipping method. This is why you couldn't remove the module from the Shipping settings, but have to instead just make it inactive. The only other way would be to delete all orders that use the shipping module, which would cause Miva to reduce the reference count back to zero and permit un-installation. Of course you'd lose your order history that way, so not a great option either.

Now, all this said, that particular module was discontinued perhaps 5 years ago or more, replaced with the USPS Advanced module. But even USPS Advanced is no longer updated or supported for Miva Merchant 4. It's probably time to consider upgrading to Miva Merchant 5, as you'll find more and more systems such as payment and shipping that rely on external APIs quit working with older MM4 technologies as their external APIs get updated.

Thanks everyone for your input. I was able to deactivate the module and will probably go with a price table based shipping module for now. I will visit with my client in regard to the upgrade. Thanks again.
