Installing Wordpress and need to upgrade PHP from 5.1.6 to 5.2.4, issues?

Anyone with experience in making this PHP upgrade? Im up-to-date with MIVA updates but there may be a module or 2 that are not the most current.

You need to contact your host and have them update PHP for you.

It was the host asking me to make sure that all of my third party modules , ( some of which might use php), are up to date. The host just wants to ensure that I understand the risks. He will upgrade PHP as soon as I give him the go-ahead. I was just reaching out to others on the forum to see if anyone had any module issues when upgrading PHP

The only Miva module I'm aware of that uses php is the Viking Coders Softgoods module for Merchant version 4. If you don't have any of your own php apps on the site, there should be no danger in upgrading. Keep in mind that you should only upgrade to php version 5.3 or 5.4 at this point. There are safe versions of php prior to 5.3, but only associated with RedHat Enterprise 5 (and CentOS 5) where their php version 5.1 has back ported security updates. If the server you're on is one of those OS', you should only be on php 5.1 or 5.3 since there is also a 5.3 secure release. If older, then it would need to be a custom php build specific to the site, which is fine, but MUST be php 5.3 since building php as a cgi in 5.2 is not secure. Best option would be have the host move the site to a new server where it runs native php 5.3.

There is a quite safe release of PHP 5.4 for RHEL5/CentOS5, works just fine with Viking Coders' Softgoods module, WordPress and most other PHP apps I've run into.

oldsportbiker - I can't tell if this was you who opened a support ticket with us recently about upgrading PHP (not sure if you are who I think you are based just on your name here on Miva forums), but if you are hosting with us - the support ticket mentioned you'd want to check any and all PHP apps/scripts, not just Miva. Miva doesn't normally use PHP so it's less of an issue, however, upgrading PHP to v5.4 does require upgrading mySQL and various supporting libraries as well, and this means if you are using Miva Merchant v5.5, you'd want to make sure the store is upgraded to the latest version to be fully compatible with the newer versions of mySQL. Versions prior to, I believe, PR8 U7, are not compatible with mySQL v5.5.x, which is what you'd get if we were to upgrade PHP to v5.4. So while not directly related to Miva, upgrading PHP requires upgrading mySQL, which requires making sure your store is up to date to work properly with the new version of mySQL, _before_ the PHP/mySQL upgrade is done.

Of course, if you have any other apps or scripts that run on PHP, you'd also want to make sure these are compatible with PHP 5.4, or that you can upgrade them to newer versions, as there are many functions in newer versions of PHP that have been deprecated or replaced by other functions, making some older apps not work correctly, or not at all, on latest versions of PHP.
