temporarily disable module for testing

Does anyone know the best way to temporarily disable a module for testing purposes?
Unassign, for example, under System Extension Configuration or uncheck "Active" under Modules? Or some other way?

Uncheck Active from the Modules interface. Otherwise you risk removing settings and/or data associated with the module.
