    Credit Card Verification

    Quick question...

I seem to be getting a lot of Declined credit card transactions caused by the fact that I am using "Address Verification" as a security measure.

So the address entered when submitting the credit card information must match the address that is on file with the institution that is holding the credit card.

When I speak with certain customers about this problem, they tell me that they have no problem using their credit card with other sites. So I assume the other sites are not using the Address Verification method.

Is anyone else having this problem?
Should I turn this feature off?
    Thanks for the support,

Turn it off, but when you get the response that the address doesn't match - THEN contact the customer to clarify the address. Perhaps they are using their home address for billing, but are shipping the order to their office or another location. In those cases make sure the cardholder has that other address on file with the card issuer as "alternate shipping address" and you can verify that by calling your merchant processing company to do manual address verification on the alternate address.

Depending on your Gateway, you may be able to tweak your AVS settings there. Contact your Gateway, they often have good support and can help with this

AVS only looks at the first part of the address for number so it may cause a problem with how they type it out. The zip code match is probably more accurate and should not be incorrect.

Thank you, for the response. I think I have a better understanding now and have this sorted out. I am going to do two things...

          1) Turn off address verification and only use zip code match
          2) Make a note on my customer information and payment page to insure that customers understand the importance of filling out accurate billing information to coincide with the credit card they will be using.

I just went through this with a customer and when she changed her billing information to coincide with the credit card she was using the order went through with out a hitch.

Do not turn off AVS verification - it's a very useful feature and you still want it on to you can see if the address matches the card. Just turn off the option to reject orders if AVS doesn't match. You can still capture orders with or without valid address and verify the ones that do not match, manually, so you do not lose all these orders altogether.

              Hi there, Remik:

Just turn off the option to reject orders if AVS doesn't match.
Is that done in the Miva Merchant store admin? Or is that something that needs to be done in the module for the gateway?

              thanks in advance.

This is done in the Gateway.

                  Re: Credit Card Verification

Ok, I just spoke with Autorize.net customer service (they are the best) and was told that I would have to purchase the "Advanced Fraud Detection Suite" for $9.95 per month if I wanted to keep the AVS on but turn off the option to reject orders if AVS doesn't match. I would then have to manually accept any orders that have been red flagged.

Just what I needed another monthly bill.

Is there any way around this?
I noticed that "Miva Payment Settings" has an option for "Offline (Authorize Only, Capture Later). Would this serve the same purpose or am I looking at this wrong?

                    Re: Credit Card Verification

You do not need that. Look under your Authorize.net settings - there's an option to disable the "reject" option if AVS fails. I'll see if I can find it. I'm pretty sure you do not need the Advanced Fraud Detection Suite - that ADDS options to your account, not removes, so they may not have understood the question correctly when they gave you that info.

Found it. Log in to your Authorize.net account. Click on the ACCOUNT menu option at the top. Click on the "Address Verification Service" link in the Security Settings section. Uncheck all options in the REJECT column (6 checkboxes). Click Submit at the bottom of the page. Done.

                        Re: Credit Card Verification

Ok, I have unchecked all 6 box's in the "General AVS Response" settings.
I am not sure but I am thinking that I would have to make a chose in the "Address and Zip Code Responses" section that is just below that section to insure that the AVS remains on. However, it does say "Reject" in the column above the check boxes.

                        Your thoughts?

                          Re: Credit Card Verification

That screen just allows you to automatically reject transactions (orders in your store) if any of the 6 options you enable do not match the card and billing info/address/ZIP/etc. AVS is always on, it will always show you whether the address/ZIP code matches - what you do with that info, however, is up to you. The system just by default rejects transactions if AVS doesn't match - which is not the best choice for e-commerce transactions. There are many valid reasons the shipping address is different from billing and you can easily verify this with your merchant processor on a case by case basis, if you do not wish to automatically reject transactions from your store.

                            Hummmm, Interesting.
After unchecking the box's and hitting upgrade, the following message came up in my AVS Settings screen...

Upgrade to the Advanced Fraud Detection Suite today!
With the Advanced Fraud Detection Suite (AFDS), you gain the flexibility of two additional methods of handling transactions that return AVS mismatch codes. In addition to allowing or declining AVS transactions, AFDS now allows you to:
                            • Process the transaction normally, but flag it for monitoring purposes
                            • Authorize the transaction and hold it for review
Adding these additional methods helps you protect your business from fraudulent transactions while saving legitimate orders from being rejected. AFDS also offers these handling methods for your Card Code Verification (CCV) settings.

Sorry, I sent my last response before seeing your reply.
So what you are saying is uncheck "EVERYTHING" because AVS is always on and the checked box's simply case the system to REJECT an order based on there specific criteria.
                              Thanks for the support,
