Split order into multiple shipments module

Would anyone be interested in a module that would allow customers to select (during the checkout) if they would like their order shipped as one package or into multiple shipments based on product availability/stock?

The idea is that if the customer ordered items from stock and items that are special ordered it would create two separate shipments (one for stock items and one for non-stock items) and then charge shipping based on those multiple shipments. I know Wombat has the option to split orders into multiple shipments so I figured this would be a great addition to that.

I'm looking at getting someone to create the module for me but didn't know if anyone wanted to split the cost to have it created?

Would you be willing to split the cost of the module between the three of us?

Do you both carry stock? Just wondering how the module would work for all of us. Stock items in one shipment non stock in another?

I would be interested for sure. I do a mix of stock and drop ship and we offer different free shipping options per product. What I would be looking for is the ability to set a base shipping option and then a default. I ship some products with free 2nd day shipping, some are truck freight (which we charge extra for), and the rest free ground. If I could show them how each product was going to be shipped and then allow them to upgrade the shipping on each product it would clear up some confusion for my customers and allow them to upgrade shipping at a lower cost than they can do now. What would be cool is offering a way to either input a hard cost, say $10 extra for next day air, or just default to UPS rates.

I was thinking it would use the shipping methods already installed in the store. It would just split the order in multiple shipments (based on product availability for example) then calculate the cost for each of those shipments and provide a price for each. The customer can see the price if they ship the order together and see the price if they split the shipment. If they upgrade the shipping it changes the price also. Something like:

1. Select the shipping method:
UPS Standard: $21.50 (selected)
UPS Next Day: $55.00

2. Select shipping options:
Ship the order as one shipment: $21.50
Ship items as they are available: $33.25


So in this case the customer has selected UPS standard. If they select UPS Next Day The shipping options would look like this:

Ship the order as one shipment: $55.00
Ship items as they are available: $72.00

This is just an idea. We can modify it so it works across the board for a variety of users.

I thought I heard somewhere that this feature would be built into the new WOMBAT release? I could be wrong, but someone could chime in. I thought that the new release would at least allow your customers to ship different items within a single order to multiple shipping addresses (ie buying 3 video games, and sending each one to a grandchild in different states).

I think wombat can track multiple shipments but the customer would only pay for 1 shipment. In our case if the customer would like to ship two separate shipments it would cost twice as much. It's a pain to have to go back and add shipping charges afterwards so we wanted to give the option to the customer during the checkout.

I could be wrong however.

If they didn't build the ability to charge their shipping separately into the new release, it would almost not be worth the trouble. I'm sure its mentioned in the WOMBAT thread if you guys wanted to take a look.

So wombat will ship and keep track of multiple packages for an order but if you would like to offer this option to your customers during the checkout it is not available at this time.

I know many large stores like Bestbuy offer this. You can select during the checkout if you would like in-stock items shipped now and out of stock later or have everything shipped together when all items are back in stock.

The way most of the "biggies" do it, would actually be fairly easy to implement with the right setup for charging cards.

Normally it's a checkmark that says "Ship items as they become available, could increase shipping costs" and if the customer checks that, you have the right to charge them for extra shipping based on how it works out.

This would be a lot easier to do then trying to double calculate shipping, you would need to store the CC (encrypted of course) so you could add to their charge.

We were thinking of doing it that way but we currently don't store CC info. It is all processed through our gateway and we never see the card.

Plus, we find customers always want to know the price BEFORE they buy so we would end up with tons of emails and calls about how much more it would be.

We get calls now about how much shipping is and customers can calculate shipping in the basket easily!

Other than we cannot see the CC info that might be a cheap alternative for us.

because we offer free ground, free 2 day, and charge for truck freight I would like the option to show how each product ships at the very least.
