Facet Handling Clarification

I'm wondering if I could get some clarification on facet handling - it does not seem to be discussed in the current documentation.

"Visible and Applied" completely makes sense, but I'm not 100% sure I understand "Hidden and Applied" versus "Hidden and Not Applied". I tested both handling options on a category but was not able to see a difference..

• hidden and applied means that it will honor the parameter if it is sent in the request
• hidden and not applied means it will ignore it

Rick, how is it sent in the request if it's hidden? Is this explained somewhere?
