inventory variants images

I need help with being able to change inventory variant images. If you forget to select "main" on the image when first selecting the variant image you want, the main image for the basic product ends up the primary display and the variant image as the second image. If you make selections correctly only the image for the variant shows up as you toggle options.

How do you edit the images for a given variant? The images tab in the product only relates to the category image and does not show variant images.

Go to the image variant's image tab and add the image source and type from there.

So I can keep adding images, but I cannot change the already posted image. When I go to select a new image it just adds a 2nd image like seen attached. I only want one image per selection. The only way I have found to fix this is to completely wipe all the inventory variants for the product and load the images again. It would be nice to see the currently assigned images for the variant

You will need to go to each individual variant product to remove an image... (no need to delete the actual variants)
If you are using image types you can add that image type field to a batch edit screen and remove them there. (make sure you've selected to also view inactive products)

What am I missing? When I go into the product, click the inventory variants tab, then select the variant I want to edit All I get is the ability to adjust how the variant is linked. There is no listing of assigned images

You can not in anyway remove variant images from the master product page.

You need to go to individual inactive product for each variant.

If you didn't use an image type then you will need to go into each variant one by one and edit the image tab of each variant.

Ah! I get it now. Never thought to look at the variants as products on their own since I have been managing them through the master. I was able to make the corrections. Thanks!

The select one might be the problem because I don't use it I'm not sure... If I get time I'll try playing around with it
I upload all additional images through attribute screen of the main product but the result should be the same.
The important thing is that the master gets assigned the same image type as the variant so it replaces it once selected instead of adding to it. Any additional images should simply display once the attribute is selected but for sanity make sure each additional image also has a image type assigned. I have mine set up to assign code a, code b, etc.
If you search for 1534111SX and click through the colors they'll swap without showing the main image that was uploaded to the master.

Hey Mark Hood - help me think through this as it's been a thorn in my side for years. I have a product that has 3-4 images with one being assigned the Image Type "main" to be used as the product thumbnail on the category page.

I also have a product that uses Inventory Kit Builder to pull in 8-10 of these products that already have 3-4 images. In order for me to get images for these 8-10 products to appear in this Inventory Kit Builder product, I have to go into each of the Inventory Variants and add an image. Now when I go back to the individual product and select one of the attributes, it now has two of the same image because the Master Product has these images assigned so that they will display when you land on the individual product page. I "think" part of the problem might be due to adding "Select One" as an attribute (I cannot recall off the top of my head why it had to be added like that). I might have been thinking that since the "Select One" attribute is now an Inventory Variant I could add the images to it but it would seem they don't display because the inventory level is zero.

It seems to get really complicated when you have more than 2 images per product.

The results were not what I expected, the new image now displays regardless of what option is selected on the product page. How do I get rid of this image? I can't find a place to remove it anywhere.

Did you go back to the product's Attribute and remove it from there?

You'll have to go into the inactive variant product for each combination to fix what may just be a image type issue or delete it. This does sound more like an image was uploaded to the main product without a type though if it's showing for all of them.

Thanks for your responses! So it turns out the image was added to one of the parts of the kit (which is a product) that was not an attribute. Weird, but glad I finally found it.
